Urge Overkill: Live at The Bowery Ballroom, 5/17/2011

Urge Overkill visited The Bowery Ballroom on Tuesday night, touring in support of their new LP “Rock & Roll Submarine” (reviewed here).  The band stepped onstage just past ten p.m., and proceeded to unleash an hour and a half of glorious swaggering rock and roll.  The setlist was well-balanced, containing tracks from the new album, old favorites, a few nice surprises for the hardcore fans…  And it all sounded FANTASTIC.  The mix was clear and powerful, the band’s interplay strong, and the “Submarine” tunes more than held their own among old favorites.  Guitars chimed in unison and squealed in dissonant aggression.  Highlights abounded: “Vacation In Tokyo”, “Take Me”, “Effigy”, “Erica Kane”, and a breathtaking rendition of “Heaven 90210”.  The group strode the stage as if playing a venue far larger than the intimate confines of The Bowery, reveling in performing their songs for an adoring crowd. A rock band, making brilliant noise.
