Comic Review: Doc Bizarre, M.D. (Image Comics, 2011)

Doc Bizarre, M.D. is the latest transmission from the twisted mind of Joe Casey (acclaimed author of Gødland, Automatic Kafka, The Intimates, Butcher Baker the Righteous Maker, and other strange and wonderful comics). It tells the story of the eponymous Doctor, medical specialist to the world of the ghoulish and paranormal.  He and his lovely assistant Epoch are called to a spooky castle on a hill above a medieval village, where they attempt to diagnose and treat a scientist’s impotent Frankensteinian creation.  Predictably, mayhem ensues.

The format for all this lunacy is a slim hardcover– the first half is story, the second half is a portfolio of character designs, promotional artwork, and sketches.  The art by Andy Suriano is full of deep shadows and vivid colors, a kaleidoscopic animation of beasts and peasants and lab-coated madmen.  Drew Gill’s book design is a delight from the spot-gloss cover to the purple-on-purple endpapers.  If you have an offbeat sense of humor and taste for weird science, this is just the thing you need in your life.  It’s a kooky mix of classic horror and madcap adventure; a gleeful cocktail of supernatural sex and monstrous medicine.

Doc Bizarre, M.D. is published by Image Comics and can be purchased from Forbidden Planet, Amazon, or your friendly neighborhood comic shop.
